URBAN ED PRESIDENT SELECTED FOR SALZBURG SEMINAR

WASHINGTON   October 8, 2003     Roxanne J. Williams, president of Urban Ed, Inc., has been appointed a fellow of the prestigious Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria, October 22-29. Williams will participate in the session Engaging Youth in Community Development.

The Salzburg Seminar is one of the world's foremost international educational centers committed to broadening the perspectives of tomorrow's leaders. Every year, 1,000 professionals of exceptional promise from around the world attend the seminar for discussion of political, social and cultural issues.

This session will examine various ways youth are actively engaged in promoting social change and the organizations and mechanisms available to support them in these endeavors. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences, to learn about the work of local, national, and international organizations that support youth development, and to consider and create new approaches for increased participation of young people in community development initiatives.

" This is a tremendous opportunity, both for Urban Ed and for me personally" , said Williams. " I am honored to be asked to share what Urban Ed has accomplished and to learn from the experience of others."

Based in Washington, D.C., Urban Ed, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides educational and career training opportunities to residents througout the community. The organization provides technolgy education, information, and skill development to unemployed and underemployed youth and young adults. Urban Ed spearheads a national campaign on juvenile justice, which will develop a strategy to create change in overall juvenile justice public policy while building the power of local grassroots youth groups. Additionally, in August, 10 unemployed, out-of-school individuals, many who had encountered the justice system, graduated from Urban Ed's D.C.-based TechnoForce program, a 3-month course that teaches advanced computer repair and maintenance as well as workplace skills. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared for the A+ certification exam and are placed in employment.
